The Adoption Process

Step #1: Before you even start looking at all those cute faces do your research. Start with asking yourself some questions:

  • How much time to I have to exercise a pet? Do I even like to exercise or do I want a couch potato pet?
  • How much time will my pet be left alone while I am at work, school or away from home? What will I do with them while I am away?
  • Can I afford the cost of annual vaccinations and vet care for a new pet?
  • What about grooming? Can I afford to get my pet groomed every month or two or do I want an animal that won’t need extra grooming?
  • What type of pet is best for my lifestyle and where I live? Does where I live have any limitations on the type of pet I can have?
  • Does anyone in my family have allergies? Is anyone in my family afraid of any type of animal? What size and type of animal will be best for ALL of the family members to handle?

You can start your homework by answering these questions and then research the different breeds for their general behavior traits and special care requirements. After you have done that, and narrowed your list down to a few good options then you are ready to start looking for just the right new addition to your family.
