Court Mandated Service
Volunteer Requirements
Interested in volunteering at the shelter or at HALHS-affiliated events? We welcome you to apply to our Adult Volunteer program if you are:
- At least 17 years old (if you are 12-16 years old, see the Youth Volunteer Program)
- Able to squat, bend, twist, lift, or stand for long periods when working directly with the animals
- Volunteers must complete all required training prior to starting their volunteer service
Important Note: This program cannot be used to fulfill court-mandated hours. Instead, view our court-mandated community service program to learn how to fulfill those hours.
YVR
Youth Volunteer Requirements
- Have an interest in socializing and caring for shelter animals (dogs, cats, etc.)
- Be 12 to 16 years old
- Be willing to spend a great deal of time (sometimes the entire two-hour shift) walking dogs. One of our goals is to walk all the shelter dogs.
- Have current medical insurance
- Be able to squat, twist, bend, lift and/or stand for long periods of time
- Be responsible, respectful, hard-working and self-directed (be able to see and do what needs to be done) with limited supervision
- 12-15 must be accompanied by a parent
- Complete the online Youth Volunteer application and parent release (see below for link to application)

Court Mandated Service
A person wanting to volunteer at Home At Last Humane Society to fulfill court mandated community service can do so through his/her probation officer. If you are not referred directly from the county, you will need to provide the following:
- Court documentation of offense
- Number of hours to be completed
- Deadline for completion
- Court contact information if possible
- Bring photo identification
- Complete an HALHS application
Court mandated community service volunteers have no contact with shelter animals or the public. Volunteer time may be spent performing the following duties:
- Laundry
- Washing dishes
- Washing/disinfecting animal crates
- Cleaning/disinfecting animal kennels
- Groundskeeping
Please be aware that the Home At Last Humane Society DOES NOT accept those convicted of the following crimes:
- Animal neglect/abuse
- Violent crimes
- Weapons charges
- Crimes of a sexual nature
- Some drug charges
